God’s Conviction is a Good Thing

John 16:8 (CSB)

When he comes, he will convict the world about sin, righteousness, and judgment:

Imagine yourself standing at a crossroads where two paths diverge: One is dark, and covered with the debris of guilt, the other is illuminated by the light of conviction. Guilt and conviction are two very different things. Guilt is the currency of the world, the flesh, and the devil, and it has the purpose of destroying you. Conviction on the other hand, is the currency of the Kingdom of God, which is intended to lead you to repentance, restoration, and Kingdom joy. Guilt can be like a chain around your ankles, keeping you bound to the past, while conviction is like the loving hand of our Heavenly Father nudging us towards our Kingdom purpose.

The Crushing Weight of Guilt

Psalm 38:4 (CSB): For my iniquities have flooded over my head; they are a burden too heavy for me to bear.

Guilt is the undeniable reality of our sinfulness in light of God's righteousness. Guilt, apart from the Holy Spirit, festers and destroys leading to despair. Guilt is the voice that says, “You've ruined it,” without the still small voice of hope and forgiveness. Guilt is seeing the mess without any way out. It will keep you awake at night, like a ticker tape of all the failures running through your mind, the should-haves, and could-haves. It is a tool used by the enemy to paralyze believers, making them ineffective and joyless.

Grace-Filled Conviction

Hebrews 4:12 (CSB): For the word of God is living and effective and sharper than any double-edged sword, penetrating as far as the separation of soul and spirit, joints and marrow. It is able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart.

Conviction is not the enemy of a believer’s life but the evidence of the Holy Spirit’s indwelling. Conviction is essential for Christian living; it is the sharp sting of the Spirit's sword that surgically removes the cancer of sin. The conviction of the Holy Spirit does not paralyze, but it mobilizes. It reveals sin, not to shame the sinner, but to draw them to repentance and a closer relationship with Christ. Conviction is the soul's signal that we are seeking the wrong kingdom and it's time to repent and get back to seeking the Kingdom of God.

Not Behavior Modification but Life Transformation

Romans 12:2 (CSB): Do not be conformed to this age, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may discern what is the good, pleasing, and perfect will of God.

Repentance is not about behavior modification, it is about life transformation. We all have a heart problem; the Bible says in Jeremiah 17:9 that “The heart is more deceitful than anything else, and incurable—who can understand it?” Changing our behavior without the transformation of our hearts is only temporary, and over time we will fall back into the same sin and deeper condemnation. However, life transformation changes everything about us from the inside out. When our hearts have been transformed by the power of the Holy Spirit it changes the way we think, feel, and see everything in and around our lives. It's as if we have taken off the lenses of this corrupt world and put on the lenses of the Kingdom of God. We see everything differently.

It's important that we not confuse the enemy's accusations with the loving conviction of God. Where guilt brings death, conviction leads to life. So embrace conviction as a loving gift from your Heavenly Father; it is good, loving, and leads you to a deeper understanding of Him and to a richer Kingdom experience.
