Visualize yourself walking under a clear, blue sky, the warmth of the sun accompanying your steps. Suddenly, the ground shifts beneath you, becoming rocky and treacherous. This image mirrors our walk with God: a passage filled with unexpected turns and challenging terrains. In these times of trial, we are called to draw nearer to the heart of God, to prioritize His Kingdom in all its richness and truth.
John 16:33 offers us a profound and comforting truth: "I have told you these things so that in me you may have peace. You will have suffering in this world. Be courageous! I have conquered the world.” Here, Jesus doesn’t just prepare us for the trials; He reassures us of His victorious presence in our struggles. This isn’t merely about bracing for life’s storms; it’s about where we choose to focus our attention while in the storm. Are we going to focus on ourselves, the storm, or on the Lord, which is where we should focus?
Our calling as followers of Christ extends beyond mere survival in difficult times. It's a call to embrace and live out our identity in Christ, to delve deeper into what it means to live for His Kingdom. Kingdom living, while challenging, is rich with purpose, grace, and fulfillment. It is about earnestly seeking first the Kingdom of God, especially when the path is filled with obstacles.
Have you ever felt that the pressures of life are overwhelming your soul? It's in these moments of vulnerability that we must recognize God's purposeful design. Our walk in the Kingdom isn't just about relishing moments of peace; it's about building spiritual fortitude in times of trial. God uses these rugged paths not to destroy us but to develop within us what I call "Kingdom Grit"—a deep-rooted strength that comes from the power of the Holy Spirit turning and churning within us.
Kingdom Grit is more than just resilience; it’s a transformative process that aligns our trials with God’s Kingdom purpose, turning every challenge into an opportunity for spiritual growth. It teaches us to view our difficulties through the lens of God’s Word, where each trial becomes a moment to deepen our faith, to see the goodness of God, even when life in the world is difficult.
In this reflection, we will explore three vital lessons that Kingdom Grit imparts. These lessons go beyond mere endurance; they are about thriving amidst adversity, understanding our Kingdom identity in Christ, and harnessing that identity to navigate life's toughest challenges with unwavering faith and grace.
So, let's embark on this path together, with hearts open to the work God is doing within us, ready to embrace the Kingdom Grit He is nurturing. Remember, though the path may be rugged, our King has overcome the world, and in Him, so will we.
1. Kingdom Grit: Finding True Worth in God’s Blessings
Matthew 6:33 (CSB) - "But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be provided for you."
As we seek first the Kingdom of God, we will encounter various challenges that sanctify our understanding and appreciation of His blessings. Kingdom Grit, a spiritual resilience born from this pursuit, teaches us a vital lesson: to cherish God's blessings without idolizing them.
In the midst of life's afflictions, our perspective on earthly blessings undergoes a transformative shift. It's through these times that we learn to value the comforts and joys of life more deeply, yet without allowing them to take hold of our hearts. The uneven paths and unexpected detours of our walk with God teach us gratitude for His gifts, while keeping us from becoming overly attached to them.
Our human nature tends to oscillate between extremes: either we cling too tightly to worldly possessions for security, or we dismiss them carelessly. This dichotomy often arises from a self-focused viewpoint, one that sees the world and its offerings as mere tools for personal satisfaction. Kingdom Grit, however, calls us to a different understanding—one that views God’s blessings through the lens of His Kingdom.
As emphasized in Matthew 6:33, our primary focus should be on the Kingdom of God and His righteousness. With this alignment, everything else finds its rightful place. Our true security and joy lie not in the transient things of this world but in the eternal God who lovingly provides them.
This Kingdom-centered perspective allows us to rightly appreciate God’s creation. We begin to see the world not just as a resource for our comfort, but as a reflection of God’s generosity and care. This balanced approach prevents us from idolizing worldly blessings while also avoiding the pitfall of undervaluing them. It guides us to enjoy and steward what God has entrusted to us, always keeping our hearts and minds fixed on Him.
Thus, as we continue to seek first the Kingdom of God, let us cultivate Kingdom Grit. Let’s learn to treasure our blessings in a way that glorifies God, always remembering that our ultimate security and delight are found not in His gifts, but in the Giver Himself. This Kingdom-focused view reshapes our interaction with the world, leading us to a life marked by gratitude, responsible stewardship, and a profound love for our Heavenly Father.
2. Kingdom Grit: Embracing Self-Denial for True Identity and Purpose
Luke 9:23 (CSB) - "Then he said to them all: 'If anyone wants to follow me, he must deny himself, take up his cross daily, and follow me.'"
In our pursuit of the Kingdom of God, Kingdom Grit emerges as a transformative force, teaching us the profound value of self-denial and leading us to our true identity and purpose in Christ.
In seasons of ease and comfort, it's all too easy to fall into the trap of self-centeredness. We often attribute our smooth sailing to our own capabilities, believing we're in full control of our lives. This illusion of control can skew our prayers, turning them into sessions where we advise God on how He should act, both in our lives and in those around us. In times of uninterrupted prosperity, the concept of bearing a cross can seem irrelevant, as we navigate through life on seemingly autopilot, guided by our desires and plans.
However, when life unexpectedly veers into the lane of trials and afflictions, our perspective begins to shift dramatically. It's in these moments of hardship that our focus turns towards the cross. Remarkably, as the intensity of life's challenges increases, our pride begins to diminish. The trials and tribulations we face in our walk of faith serve as a crucible, purifying us from the false identities imposed by the world, and leading us to discover our true selves in Christ Jesus.
These experiences of suffering are not meant to break us, but to break away the layers of self-reliance and false pride. They remind us that our ultimate identity and purpose are not found in the accolades of this world or the comfort of smooth paths, but in the transformative power of the cross. As we learn to deny ourselves, we find our true identity as followers of Christ, shaped not by the world's standards but by His life, death, and resurrection.
Therefore, as we continue to seek first the Kingdom of God, let us embrace the discipline of self-denial as part of our Kingdom Grit. In doing so, we align ourselves more closely with Christ, understanding that our true purpose and identity are found in Him. Through this process, we emerge not only as followers of Jesus but as individuals whose lives are marked by a deep sense of divine calling and a clear understanding of our place in God’s grand narrative.
James 1:2–4 (CSB)
Consider it a great joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you experience various trials, because you know that the testing of your faith produces endurance. And let endurance have its full effect, so that you may be mature and complete, lacking nothing.
Proverbs 22:15 (CSB)
Foolishness is bound to the heart of a youth; a rod of discipline will separate it from him.
3. Kingdom Grit: Trusting in God’s Sovereign Plan
Romans 8:28 (CSB) - "We know that all things work together for the good of those who love God, who are called according to his purpose."
As we seek first the Kingdom of God, Kingdom Grit cultivates in us a deep-seated trust in the goodness of God and His plan, affirming that He orchestrates both the highs and lows of our lives for His Kingdom purposes.
In the landscape of Kingdom living, we are assured of a profound truth: God is intricately weaving together the good and the bad in our lives to fulfill His divine purpose. This assurance is beautifully encapsulated in Romans 8:28, reminding us that every circumstance, be it favorable or challenging, is part of God's grand design for those who love Him and are called according to His purpose.
When life's roads become tumultuous and it seems as though everything is unraveling before our eyes, we can cling to the promise that, in God’s Kingdom, everything is converging for our ultimate good. Our human nature may tempt us to question God's goodness and His involvement in our lives, especially during tough times. Questions like "How can a loving God allow such difficulties?" may arise in our hearts.
However, Kingdom living equips us to reframe these doubts with the unchanging truth of God's Word. Romans 8:28 assures us that God is at work in all situations, whether they bring ease or hardship. This understanding becomes clearer when we shift our focus from our personal ambitions to living for His Kingdom purposes. It's in this shift that we begin to comprehend that even in the roughest paths, God is actively working for our good.
This realization of God’s sovereign plan brings a transformation in our perspective. We start to see that our challenges are not merely obstacles but opportunities for God to manifest His power and faithfulness in our lives. Our trust in His plan grows stronger, enabling us to navigate life’s complexities with a peace that surpasses understanding.
Therefore, as we continue to prioritize the Kingdom of God in our lives, let us cultivate Kingdom Grit by trusting wholeheartedly in His sovereign plan. Let’s embrace the assurance that in every circumstance, God is weaving a tapestry of grace and purpose, shaping us into the image of His Son and drawing us closer to His heart. Through this trust, we find strength, peace, and an unshakeable confidence in the perfect plan of our Heavenly Father.
