The Wayward Wanderers and the Secure Seekers

David Yarbrough

Hebrews 11:6 (CSB)

Now without faith it is impossible to please God, since the one who draws near to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him.

So many people in this world are searching for "the meaning of life." This means they're trying to make sense of life. They're looking for something to make them feel significant and give them an identity. The meaning of life, our purpose, and our identity are all found when we know who God is and realize our position in Christ Jesus. This should fill us with joy and hope and invigorate our desire to seek first His Kingdom and His righteousness (Matt. 6:33).

It's not natural to seek God.

Romans 3:11 (CSB) There is no one who understands; there is no one who seeks God.

We must understand that the desire to seek God is not a natural inclination of our flesh. But it's a supernatural work of the Holy Spirit in and through us. Our flesh is only interested in seeking selfish desires and making life all about me, myself, and I. For most of us, it takes a thousand disappointments and many rough roads bouncing around on the back of the struggle bus before we ever consider truly seeking God.

We live in a world of wanderers.

Psalm 82:5 (NLT) They wander about in darkness, while the whole world is shaken to the core.

The world is filled with people who are not seeking God but rather running from Him, doing everything they can to get away from His presence. Then there are some who do not seek Him diligently with their whole hearts. Just a half hearted effort to seek God motivated by the desire to make life better here and now. This is a real struggle because our flesh is always drawn to the profits of this world and the pleasures of our senses. Think about how seldom people speak of God and His Kingdom and when they do, it's with cold affections that are all centered on themselves. Think about how many dead and careless prayers you've heard or maybe even spoken.

Seeking God is a supernatural work of the Holy Spirit

Psalm 73:25 (CSB) Who do I have in heaven but you? And I desire nothing on earth but you.

To truly seek God through the supernatural work of the Holy Spirit is to find true purpose and meaning in this rough world and a pure fountain to refresh our souls. We will never find true joy traveling the rough roads of this life until we learn to truly seek Him, His Kingdom and his righteousness first above everything else (Matt 6:33). Then we find the true joy and refreshment that can only be found in the Kingdom of God. It's there every day. Just like God had the Israelites get up early in the morning and go gather the manna (Ex. 16:21). The goodness and refreshment of the Kingdom is there every morning if we will truly seek Him.

The devil is a liar.

John 8:44 (NLT) For you are the children of your father the devil,..... for he is a liar and the father of lies.

The devil fills our minds with lies that there's no need to seek God today because we're too busy, or maybe every time we seek Him, things don't work out the way we think they should. The question is, will we seek Him even when there seems to be no profit in this world? We must understand the eternal rewards of seeking first the Kingdom of God and his righteousness. Even if it seems like we're not fully grasping the Kingdom or our identity in Christ, we can find comfort in knowing that we are seeking the things that truly matter and that they will outlast everything in this world.  Because it's better to be a seeker than a wanderer.

1 John 2:17 (CSB)

And the world with its lust is passing away, but the one who does the will of God remains forever.
